Many travelers are either one OR the other. I've done both. The difference, in my opinion: Independent On your schedule Arrive when you want, depart when you want You choose lodging, can choose smaller, closer to center Guided Dedicated, usually knowledgeable group leader Group size depends on $ paid Sometimes long van/coach rides Attractions usually included with quicker group entrance TL:DR My wife prefers guided trips. She likes the information/knowledge provided by the group leader. She also likes being driven and not having to worry about train or bus timetables. I, on the other hand, prefer independent travel. I like doing the research ahead of time. Also, I've found some of the more budget groups place you in hotels that are a long walk or required bus/taxi to the city center, which also corresponds to the # of travelers in the group.
